Phoenix Group Rises Up The

The latest Tortoise Responsibility Index is out today and Phoenix has continued to rise up the rankings. This reflects the positive steps we have been taking to make a difference for our people, our customers, our community and our environment, in line with our sustainability agenda which is at the heart of our business.

The Tortoise Responsibility Index ranks FTSE 100 companies on their commitment to key social, environmental and ethical objectives, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We have risen up the Index as a result of both the action we are taking - “Walk” - rising up to 22nd place (from 34th previously) , and the amount of measurable and time-bound targets we are setting for the future - “Talk” - ranking in 42nd place (from 86th previously).

Phoenix also features in the top 50 companies in the Tortoise Climate 100 Index published for the first time today, ranking in 18th place of the FTSE 100 companies for its commitment to, and performance on, key climate and environmental objectives

As a reminder, here is a link to our sustainability strategy and the key commitments that are driving forward our progress as a responsible and sustainable business.

Commenting, Claire Hawkins, Director of Corporate Affairs and Investor Relations, Phoenix Group, said:

“I’m delighted to see the progress we have made in the latest Tortoise Responsibility Index and that we are 18th amongst FTSE 100 companies in the Climate 100 Index. We’re committed to taking action and setting targets to ensure we’re always advancing as a responsible business.

“As the UK’s largest long term savings and retirement company we have an important role to play in making a positive difference, which includes taking responsible and sustainable investment decisions, and caring about the environment and the communities where we operate. We have a clear purpose which is to help people secure a life of possibilities.

“We were among the first insurers, if not the first UK insurer, to make a clear commitment to help tackle climate change in line with science based targets. We have set a target of ensuring our operations are net-zero carbon by 2025 and our investment portfolios by 2050. The impact of climate change is one of the biggest global issues and Phoenix is committed to supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial level.

“Phoenix is building a strong and sustainable business to deliver for all of our stakeholders. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we’re continuing to invest in our people, expanding our expertise and building a diverse and inclusive workforce to support our customers. We always look to make a positive difference, to add value now and for future generations.”
